Help! I installed Smedge and now I can't log into my machines!!!!

The Smedge version 2.3 installer creates a new user account (with the password Smedge) that Smedge uses for the SmedgeEngine process to use. However, it does not hide that user account from the Windows "Welcome" screen. If you had just been using the default Administrator account, this new account will be the only account you see on the Welcome screen, and it appears that you are locked out of your computer.

Thankfully, this is not the case. To log in as you used to, simply press Control + Alt + Delete. This will bring up a prompt that allows you to type the user account name manually. Now type Administrator as the user account name (and any password if you had one). This will then allow you to log in as you used to.

You may want to configure the Administrator account to log in automatically. Click here for instructions from Microsoft to have Windows log in automatically

You can also hide the Smedge user account from the Windows Welcome screen. To do so, you must edit the Registry. Use caution modifying the registry.

  1. Start regedit.exe
  2. Browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\SpecialAccounts\UserList
  3. Create a DWORD entry called Smedge, and set the value to 0

Note that the next version of the installer will create this user account hidden in the first place, so this should no longer be an issue.

Please contact support if you have any questions.
